GENBAND Sees Drastic SBC Growth in Service Provider Segment

GENBAND (News - Alert) may be getting extra attention of late for its WebRTC-related efforts — the company did lead a WebRTC webinar earlier this year, but the company's market power still rests in its more traditional communications technologies, including its session border controller (SBC) line. GENBAND’s Smart Edge family of SBCs was found to be the fastest growing in the service provider market segment, according to reports from Exact Ventures, Infonetics Research and Synergy (News - Alert) Research Group.
Synergy recently reported that GENBAND accounted for 26 percent of revenue in the service provider SBC segment in the second quarter — more than doubling its 10.2 percent share from Q1 of this year. This dramatic growth was about 4.5 times the growth rate of the overall SBC market for the same period.
GENBAND’s Smart Edge SBCs are a part of many large networks around the globe, including those of fixed, cable and mobile network operators in order to solve security and mediation issues at the network border. The fact that mobile operators in particular are looking to GENBAND to handle signaling and bearer traffic exchanges between new VoLTE and adjacent networks is a definite driver of the company’s growth.
According to BG Kumar, president of GENBAND’s Multimedia Business Unit, the company’s success in the service provider SBC market segment is all part of its Making Networks Smarter initiative, of which Smart Edge SBCs are a key component.
“We recognized early that the move to IP in the mobile space would create a tremendous need for mediating and managing traffic based on multiple types of protocols and compression technologies,” said Kumar in a statement. “Accordingly, we made long-term investments to fortify our SBCs with transcoding resources capable of scaling to meet the needs of the world’s largest mobile network operators, while continually enhancing our market-leading capabilities across all media types.”
