TMCnet Session Border Controller Week in Review

2013 is already shaping up to be an exciting year in the session border controller space. It was a fairly eventful week, so let’s take a look back at some of the top headlines and stories from the past few days, shall we?
One story this week recounted the fact that that the DSP Group (News
- Alert) had developed a new VoIP chipset. The DVF99 is the latest in DSP’s XciteR line of voice processors. The new chip is designed for Tier 1 enterprise telephony OEMs and boasts enhanced graphics and a number of advanced peripherals.
Also this week, Juniper Networks revealed its new partner strategy. The Cisco (News
- Alert) rival significantly enhanced its Partner Advantage program, which now includes more than 12,000 partners. Juniper has decided to make enhancements to the program in the areas of cloud infrastructure, support maintenance and professional partner services.
It was also a good week to look forward and imagine what the remaining 11.5 months of 2013 will bring us in the Unified Communications (News - Alert) space. The good news is that 2013 looks like it will be a year characterized by strong growth in the UC market. A report from Information Week stated that more than 1/3 of respondents had already deployed UC and another third plan on doing so in the next two years. Furthermore, a Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) report stated that the UC market will increase by 24 percent by 2015. All told, 2013 is shaping up to be a growth year for the space.
But that doesn’t mean that UC is pervasive everywhere. It turns out that VoIP solutions have not caught on quite as fast in the UK, and VoIP awareness is low. Studies show that awareness has risen 3 percent from last year, but only 29 percent of respondents were interested in using such services. This is a lower adoption rate than in the US, and BT (News - Alert) is reacting to these numbers by releasing “SmartTalk,” a VoIP calling application.
There you have it! It’s been an interesting week in the session border controller space. Check back soon for more news and highlights!
