GL Announces Channel Associated Signaling (CAS) Protocol Emulator

A new method of signaling used in communications – called a “channel associated signaling (CAS) protocol emulator” – was recently announced by GL Communications (News - Alert).

With CAS, a timeslot or channel carrying speech will also have addressing and signaling options. It can be used to set up and take down calls.

More details were offered by the company in a recent statement.

Supervisory signaling is carried as either "onhook" or "offhook.” Also, addressing is carried as dual tone multi-frequency or other multi-frequency options.

“This form of signaling is still used to route calls on the public switched telephone network (PSTN) including subscriber lines like 2wire local loops, on trunks between central offices (CO), and on access trunks such as PBXs,” the company said in the statement. “Typical CAS signaling methods are: Loop Start, R1, MFC-R2, SS5, and other variants of these methods.”

The company also announced that CAS emulation was added to GL's Message Automation and Protocol Simulation (MAPS) platform – a testing tool used for SIP, MEGACO, MGCP, SS7, ISDN, GSM, MAP, CAS, LTE (News - Alert), UMTS, SS7 SIGTRAN, ISDN SIGTRAN, SIP I, GSM AoIP, Diameter and other protocols.

The MAPS CAS Emulator is used in testing of CAS signaling and transmission and detection of TDM traffic over T1 E1 using scripts. It is used to diagnose troubles and maintain devices and networks.

The MAPS CAS supports Profile Editor and Script Editor. MAPS also supports Tool Command Language scripting tools. These can offer remote operation, automation and multisite connectivity.

In addition, a call generation feature in MAPS lets a user simulate incoming and outgoing communication in the CAS network.

MAPS assesses call handling scripts, and then provides statistics on total calls, active calls, the number of completed calls, passed calls, failed calls and calls per second. Call reception and call generation windows offer results on call status and script execution, the company said.

Similarly, GL Communications supplies test, monitoring and analysis equipment for TDM, wireless, IP and VoIP networks, according to TMCnet. Earlier this year, it released its ISDN Protocol Analysis and Emulation software.

GL, which offers telecom engineering and IT consulting services, explained on its website how it serves the cellular, wireless, microwave, fiber-optic, leased T-1 network, and satellite communication sectors.

The Evolution of Session Border Control
Session Border Controllers have come a long way since they were first conceived in the early 2000s as a simple, security-focused element. As service providers and enterprises began deploying more advanced real-time applications over IP-including Unified Communications, video, instant messaging, and conferencing-the burden on SBCs grew in step.

Sonus SBC 1000 and SBC 2000 Remote Configuration Services
The Sonus SBC 1000 and SBC 2000 session border controllers are designed for enterprises and managed service providers that require a small- to mid-sized SBC. These SBCs deliver enterprise-grade features, easy integration with Microsoft Lync and support for both TDM and IP trunks, which allows the SBC 1000/2000 to function as a Survivable Branch Appliance.

The ABCs of PCI DSS + VoIP
As the boundaries between VoIP and IP-based data networks continue to blur, enterprises would be wise to apply the same levels of network security across all entrypoints. Session border controllers are designed to protect VoIP network borders from unauthorized entry, but not all SBCs are created equal in terms of security features and functionality.
