A system on a chip (SoC) is a microprocessor that has all the required hardware and electronic circuits at one place. A SoC has the components that form the core of a computer. A SoC may consist of both the hardware and software required.
Looking to offer an advanced SoC, MIPS Technologies (News
- Alert) has joined hands with Ingenic Semiconductor, a mobile multimedia applications provider based in China, to unveil JZ4780. This MIPS-Based SoC is offered at a low cost along with state of the art graphics and other features.
Experts believe that SoC designs result in reduced power consumption, and are generally more dependable. Compared to multi-chip systems which they are fast replacing all over the world, SoC designs cost less. It also brings down the assembly costs as the manufacturers will have to deal with lesser number of packages in the system.
According to MIPS Technologies, 1.3GHz+ SoC is ideal for devices that are looking to be power-efficient.
“We congratulate Ingenic on its latest accomplishment with the highly competitive JZ4780. Its combination of high performance, power efficiency and cost-effective design demonstrates the advantages of the MIPS architecture for mobile devices such as tablets. Now that the MIPS architecture is completely supported in Android (News - Alert) releases from Google, Android devices based on MIPS can take advantage of a broad range of applications, while leveraging the long battery life and great user experience that MIPS can enable," said Gideon Intrater, vice president of marketing, MIPS Technologies.
Recently, the company announced that it offered updated modules for virtualization and SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) with the latest release of its MIPS architecture. According to the company, this new release provides increasing computing capacity for lots of devices and even the hardware virtualization is made safer along with parallel processing of vector operations.
