Cirpack, a company that develops field proven, next-generation transit switches and local exchange with simultaneous native support for ATM, TDM and IP networks, has now deployed Technicolor’s (News - Alert) Session Border Controller (SBC) and softswitch to provide SIP interconnection between two network operators in Italy.

There are multiple network interconnections and increasingly heterogeneous devices in use today. Network operators need to strengthen security and they cannot afford to take risks with core network security. SBCs respond efficiently to today’s growing need for security, while adding valuable, innovative features for the future.

With separate Media and Signaling planes, the SBC’s functions and capacity can be expanded as per the operators’ needs – simply by adding additional modules to existing equipment, which lowers the additional cost by leveraging the investments.

Cirpack interconnection solution has been engineered to Italian operator standard. The solution reduces operational costs while optimizing infrastructure. Technicolor’s SBC and softswitch are deployed as Cirpack’s solution in a regional operator’s network. The deployment enables SIP interconnection with Italy’s primary telecommunications provider.

It is deployed at the edge of the network as an interconnection element for media and signaling. The apt positioning of deployment ensures efficient routing features and necessary security.

"We are delighted to deliver our SIP Interconnection capabilities to the Italian market," said Juan Lopez, head of Cirpack. "This most recent success is the result of close collaboration with our operator customers over several months. We have supported similar efforts throughout Europe, including the French, German and Italian markets, enabling our customers to offer new and innovative services to their end-users."

Founded in 1999 on expertise and voice switching technologies, Cirpack has been the leader and operational in the field since 1998.

Technicolor, a worldwide technology icon in the media and entertainment sector, is committed to enhancing the media experience on any screen, in theaters, at home and on the go. With its world-class research and innovation laboratories, Technicolor is able to deliver advanced video service to the content creators and distributor.

Technicolor has an extensive intellectual property portfolio that focuses on imaging and sound technologies, which in turn is based on a thriving licensing business.

The Evolution of Session Border Control
Session Border Controllers have come a long way since they were first conceived in the early 2000s as a simple, security-focused element. As service providers and enterprises began deploying more advanced real-time applications over IP-including Unified Communications, video, instant messaging, and conferencing-the burden on SBCs grew in step.

The ABCs of PCI DSS + VoIP
As the boundaries between VoIP and IP-based data networks continue to blur, enterprises would be wise to apply the same levels of network security across all entrypoints. Session border controllers are designed to protect VoIP network borders from unauthorized entry, but not all SBCs are created equal in terms of security features and functionality.
