TMCnet Session Border Controller Week in Review

As more and more businesses move to SIP-based unified communications technology, they are starting to see the need for session border controllers. SBCs allow different flavors of SIP to communicate with one another and help secure the network from all kinds of problems. Session border controllers are very popular with companies these days, so there is often a great deal of news about them. Here are some of the top stories of the week.


First came the first in a series of stories about how session border controllers help in multi-vendor communications environments. The piece explains how different flavors of SIP are like different dialects of a language. They all fit within the same basic protocols, but there are certain proprietary differences. SBCs help deal with these differences. The second piece in this series will delve deeper into the role of legacy systems and the need for network security.

In industry new this week, Infonetics (News - Alert) Research issued a report stating that Sonus Networks is one of the strongest and fastest-growing companies in the session border controller space. In a statement, Diane Myers, principal analyst, VoIP, UC and IMS, Infonetics Research (News - Alert), said, "Our latest research confirms that Sonus' service provider SBC business continues to outpace overall market growth. The company's focus on delivering SIP-based solutions is paying dividends in the form of strong market momentum and increasing market share."

In other news, Squire Technologies has come out with a Class 5 Softswitch with built in session border controller functionality.  It enables features such as call forwarding, select call acceptance/rejection, voicemail and voice announcements. The SBC functionality will increase security of the service, guarding against denial of service attacks.
