Session border controllers are a key piece of technology to any SIP communications deployment. They provide security to the network and allow disparate protocols to communicate with one another. This was a very busy week for news from the session border controller space. Let’s take a look at some of the top stories.

The big news this week was how robust the session border controller market really is. The Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group recently published a report about the SBC market, indicating that it saw an 11 percent revenue growth during the third quarter of 2012 compared to the third quarter of 2011. "Five quarters ago, Dell'Oro Group warned of impending competitive changes in the SBC industry, and selling prices dropped 28 percent by early 2012 versus mid-2011. While pricing has not reached pre-warning levels, they are now on the rise," said Dell'Oro Group analyst Chris DePuy.

It was also a big week for session border controller leader Sonus Networks (News - Alert). First, the company announced that its CEO, Raymond Dolan, would take part in several investment conferences in New York and Arizona during the month of November. Also, the company, along with TriCore Solutions, moved forward in an initiative to extend their application outsourcing relationship through the implementation and support of Microsoft Exchange Managed Services.

Finally this week, Sonus announced that Hutchison 3G (News - Alert), an Austrian mobile multimedia operator, selected the SBC 5000 as its SIP interconnect platform. “Our business is growing at a tremendous rate and we needed a solution that we could be confident would be able to scale as we need it, without compromising on performance,” said Rico Chemnitz, head of IT core network at H3G Austria.

The Evolution of Session Border Control
Session Border Controllers have come a long way since they were first conceived in the early 2000s as a simple, security-focused element. As service providers and enterprises began deploying more advanced real-time applications over IP-including Unified Communications, video, instant messaging, and conferencing-the burden on SBCs grew in step.

The ABCs of PCI DSS + VoIP
As the boundaries between VoIP and IP-based data networks continue to blur, enterprises would be wise to apply the same levels of network security across all entrypoints. Session border controllers are designed to protect VoIP network borders from unauthorized entry, but not all SBCs are created equal in terms of security features and functionality.
