A mobile multimedia operator in Austria, Hutchison 3G (News - Alert) Austria (H3G), from its mobile core network, has selected Sonus Networks’ (News - Alert) SBC 5000 series of session border controllers (SBCs) as the SIP interconnect platform. To its 1.4 million mobile subscribers, while providing a foundation to deploy future SIP-based applications and services, Sonus SBCs will help H3G deliver an improved quality of service by enhancing network reliability and security.

Following a rigorous competitive proof of concept, H3G selected the Sonus Session Border Controller 5200 and Sonus Session Border Controller 5100. Between the two companies, H3G’s selection of Sonus marks the beginning of a new relationship. In a single scalable device, the Sonus SBC 5000 series combines security, media switching and transcoding services and is designed to provide an intelligent interconnection between H3G and their partner networks.

On a single server, the Sonus SBC 5100 delivers 250 to 10,000 sessions and the Sonus SBC 5200 supports up to 64,000 sessions. H3G has selected Sonus to secure the network border, enforce quality of service policies, traverse intermediate network address translation (NAT) and firewalls, ensure regulatory compliance, deliver the essential transcoding of media and provide codec, dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) and fax interworking.

Sonus Networks claims that the SBC portfolio is the fastest growing on the market and the Sonus SBC 5200 has more than twice the capacity of the leading competitor.

“Our business is growing at a tremendous rate and we needed a solution that we could be confident would be able to scale as we need it, without compromising on performance,” said Rico Chemnitz, head of IT core network at H3G Austria.

Serge Adam, vice president EMEA at Sonus concluded that, to deliver the next-generation needs of SIP communications, the Sonus SBC 5000 series is designed to deliver interwork, embedded media transcode, robust security and advanced call route in a high-performance, small form-factor device.

The Evolution of Session Border Control
Session Border Controllers have come a long way since they were first conceived in the early 2000s as a simple, security-focused element. As service providers and enterprises began deploying more advanced real-time applications over IP-including Unified Communications, video, instant messaging, and conferencing-the burden on SBCs grew in step.

The ABCs of PCI DSS + VoIP
As the boundaries between VoIP and IP-based data networks continue to blur, enterprises would be wise to apply the same levels of network security across all entrypoints. Session border controllers are designed to protect VoIP network borders from unauthorized entry, but not all SBCs are created equal in terms of security features and functionality.
