TMCnet's Session Border Controller Week in Review

It’s been a busy week getting back to technology news, so let’s recap what happened in session border control this week.

This week, Acme Packet (News - Alert) made headlines as the company introduced its Net-Net 6300, a new platform for interactive IP communications networks. Speaking to the next generation of services, the latest delivers throughput, performance and capacity, all in a 3U form factor.


“By combining the latest advances in microprocessors and software with the familiar operations model of our proven systems, we've delivered a platform that will help our customers make a smooth transition towards the future,” said Pat MeLampy, chief technology officer at Acme Packet.

Market intelligence from Infonetics (News - Alert) this week highlighted session border controllers, specifically multi-vendor policies. Based on a survey of 51 different providers, the results say that most companies prefer to work with multiple vendors instead of just one.

According to the report, of the users surveyed, represented were 39 percent of the world's current revenue in telecommunications firms and accounted for 41 percent of the world's capital expenditures in telecommunications.

Acme Packet was listed as a "top vendor" in the field, and is on top of several lists in terms of vendors currently under evaluation.

Last but not least, Acme Packet was certified by Verizon for its enterprise session border controllers, and now their Net-Net will work with Verizon’s IP Trunking Services and Microsoft (News - Alert) Lync Server 2010.

“We’re seeing a notable increase in the number of businesses interested in combining Microsoft Lync with our IP Trunking with the added benefit of Acme Packet’s premises-based SBC. The Verizon (News - Alert) IP Trunking service delivers compelling cost efficiencies with features such as burstable enterprise shared trunks and VoIP enterprise routing to generate cost savings that can be reinvested to fund new unified communications capabilities,” Bob Minai, executive director of advanced communications product management for Verizon Enterprise Solutions, noted in a statement.

Acme Packet’s plan to simplify SIP trunking is made possible with this certification, which will enable customers to integrate Microsoft Lync with legacy multi-vendor communications environments without compromising Microsoft Lync’s powerful enterprise voice features.
