The session delivery networks solutions provider, Acme packet announced that its Net-Net Enterprise Session Director (ESD) enterprise session border controllers have achieved Verizon certification.

Thanks to the certification, Acme Packet Net-Net will now work with Verizon’s IP Trunking Services and Microsoft (News - Alert) Lync Server 2010, making it easier for businesses to employ unified communications across a global enterprise. With this important certification, Acme Packet gains vital unified communications capabilities to offer secure, simplified SIP trunking to its partners and end customers. The compatibility with Acme Packet (News - Alert) and Microsoft Lync will enable Verizon customers to control costs and consolidate their networks, according to Acme Packet.

The Acme Packet Net-Net ESD provides key session control and internetworking functions that enable customers to integrate Microsoft Lync with legacy multi-vendor communications environments without compromising Microsoft Lync’s powerful enterprise voice features.

The certification is part of Acme Packet’s strategy to simplify and accelerate SIP trunking, which Acme Packet announced earlier this year. The move will enable both Acme Packet and Verizon (News - Alert) to offer managed and non-managed session delivery network solutions to customers in more than 20 countries.

With Verizon the VoIP IP Trunking service coming complete with the Acme Packet and Microsoft Lync 2010 configuration, Verizon customers will be able to deploy interactive voice and video communications onto a common IP backbone. This will enable the enterprise customers to streamline their operations, achieve cost-reduction and enjoy enhanced worker productivity through improved collaboration.

“We’re seeing a notable increase in the number of businesses interested in combining Microsoft Lync with our IP Trunking with the added benefit of Acme Packet’s premises-based SBC. The Verizon IP Trunking service delivers compelling cost efficiencies with features such as burstable enterprise shared trunks and VoIP enterprise routing to generate cost savings that can be reinvested to fund new unified communications capabilities,” executive director of advanced communications product management for Verizon Enterprise Solutions, Bob Minai noted in a statement.

The Evolution of Session Border Control
Session Border Controllers have come a long way since they were first conceived in the early 2000s as a simple, security-focused element. As service providers and enterprises began deploying more advanced real-time applications over IP-including Unified Communications, video, instant messaging, and conferencing-the burden on SBCs grew in step.

The ABCs of PCI DSS + VoIP
As the boundaries between VoIP and IP-based data networks continue to blur, enterprises would be wise to apply the same levels of network security across all entrypoints. Session border controllers are designed to protect VoIP network borders from unauthorized entry, but not all SBCs are created equal in terms of security features and functionality.
