Companies can measure their success in a number of ways: sales, acquisitions, growth, etc. But every once in a while it is nice to be noticed by an independent group and recognized as an industry leader. Such is the case with Sonus, which was named to the “Leaders” Quadrant in Gartner’s (News - Alert) recent “Magic Quadrant for Session Border Controllers” report.

Sonus is a company that specializes in SIP communications and has developed a series of session border controllers to deliver secure SIP-based communications, helping service providers and enterprises deploy unified communications applications.

The report by Gartner focused on incumbent SBC vendors as well as companies that have developed competing products for communications service providers in the last two years. Sonus offers a wide range of session border controllers, ranging from devices that are designed for small offices and branch locations to SBCs that have been created to serve the needs of high-capacity environments, including large service providers.

“We are very proud of Sonus’ ‘Leadership’ designation and consider our positioning in the magic quadrant by Gartner as confirmation of our mission to enable Cloud-based Unified Communications (News - Alert) that help businesses communicate faster, smarter and more collaboratively,” said Ray Dolan, president and CEO of Sonus, in a statement. “Our focused execution on SIP-based solutions has further enhanced our market position, resulting in the industry’s fastest growing and broadest portfolio of certified Microsoft (News - Alert) Lync Session Border Controllers.”

Recently, Sonus released a range of books explaining SIP-based communications to people unfamiliar with the technology. These “For Dummies” books included entries on SIP trunking and session management.

The ABCs of PCI DSS + VoIP
As the boundaries between VoIP and IP-based data networks continue to blur, enterprises would be wise to apply the same levels of network security across all entrypoints. Session border controllers are designed to protect VoIP network borders from unauthorized entry, but not all SBCs are created equal in terms of security features and functionality.
