TMCnet Session Border Controller Week in Review

As more and more companies begin to realize the wide variety of uses for unified communications technology, the importance of the session border controller becomes increasingly evident. There is always a lot of news in the session border controller space, and this week was no exception. Let’s take a look at some of the top stories of the past few days, shall we?


First up, AirTouch Communications, a company that supplies wireless telecommunications devices, has received purchase orders for its SmartLinx “super router.” This device enables smartphone users to keep their landlines, enhancing their signal quality at the same time. "We are very excited about the interest in SmartLinX and the momentum we are gaining both domestically and internationally for deployment of our SmartLinX products by both service providers and distributors," said Hide Kanakubo, CEO, AirTouch. "These orders of our SmartLinX are very encouraging and we expect this upward trend to continue as we enter additional markets and expand the Air Touch brand of products, both SmartLinX and HomeConneX internationally." 

In other news this week, Dialogic (News - Alert), a company that wishes to provide an enhanced mobile experience to its customers, was placed in Gartner’s “Visionary” quadrant in the session border controller space. “We are honored to be counted among Gartner’s (News - Alert) Visionaries in the Session Border Controller market,” said Kevin Cook, president and CEO of Dialogic.  “Service delivery is an important part of our strategy and we have strived to create a high-performing SBC product portfolio. We are successfully helping service providers worldwide address the real world challenges associated with transforming their networks and services to all-IP, and will continue to execute our vision for an SBC that not only excites customers today but will provide them with the technical and operational innovation that’s necessary for future success.”

Finally, Acme Packet (News - Alert) has announced a new entry in its session border controller lineup. Its Net-Net 6300 device is an improvement over its 4500, increasing the throughput from 5Gbps to 40Gbps. “The system hardware in the 4500 constrained the transcoding and encryption capacity,” said Jonathan Zarkower (News - Alert), director of product marketing at Acme Packet. “Most of what we see competitively is either in big iron platforms, or in COTS servers that are expensive to maintain and operate, because of their increased power consumption, cooling etc.”
