CallPlus Group has deployed Acme Packet's (News - Alert) Net-Net Session Director session border controllers (SBC) to protect and control the access and interconnect borders of its VoIP network. The solution provides comprehensive security capabilities that mitigate risks by protecting against denial-of-service threats as well as service overloads.

The Net-Net Session Director provides extensive SIP normalization, mediation and interworking functions that enable CallPlus to accelerate service deployment by overcoming interoperability issues in its ADSL access network and other SIP-based network elements. CallPlus deployed high availability (HA) SBC configurations and exploits Acme Packet's unique load-balancing and dynamic session routing capabilities to ensure carrier-class reliability for its business and residential VoIP services.

“Acme Packet's market leading SBCs help CallPlus Group deliver high-quality and cost-effective VoIP services to both our residential and commercial customers,” said Adrian Dick, chief technology officer for CallPlus Group. “As CallPlus Group continues to rapidly expand, Acme Packet's highly scalable solution ensures a solid foundation for future growth, as well as innovative new services."

Added Tim Ziemer, vice president of North America and Asian Pacific Japan sales at Acme Packet: "CallPlus Group wanted a first-class SBC solution that would bring the same level of security, interoperability, and reliability for VoIP as any legacy circuit switch network. With the Net-Net Session Director, CallPlus Group can continue to deliver low-cost and high-quality VoIP services to the company's 150,000 plus business and residential customers."

Recently, MTN (News - Alert) Cyprus also deployed Acme Packet's Net-Net Session Director SBCs to deliver SIP trunking services to business customers, and enable SIP interconnects to other service providers. Intracom Telecom (News - Alert), a global telecommunication systems vendor – with unparalleled system integration capabilities – has undertaken the provision of consulting, integration and support services for the solution.

This solution will enable MTN to accelerate time-to-market, as well as deliver highly-scalable, secure and reliable SIP trunking services.

"MTN continuously strives to deliver innovative, cost-effective, high-quality services to our customers,” said Spyros Spyrou, Core Switching Networks Planning Manager at MTN Cyprus. “The Acme Packet SBC's flexible routing and failover capabilities enable us to deliver the high service levels our customers expect, while keeping operating expenses in check.”

The Evolution of Session Border Control
Session Border Controllers have come a long way since they were first conceived in the early 2000s as a simple, security-focused element. As service providers and enterprises began deploying more advanced real-time applications over IP-including Unified Communications, video, instant messaging, and conferencing-the burden on SBCs grew in step.
