With customers in over 50 countries across the globe, IP networking solutions provider Sonus Networks is on a mission to expedite the adoption of SIP trunking and unified communications (UC). Consequently, the IP networking company late last month acquired Network Equipment Technologies, Inc. (NET (News - Alert)) to expand its portfolio of Session Border Controller (SBC) solutions for enterprise customers.

It brings proven engineering resources, broader channel capability and a broad U.S. Federal Government installed base to leverage into SIP-enabled platforms, said Sonus. The combined portfolio of Sonus and NET offers enterprise customers an end-to-end SBC platform for real-time, SIP-enabled unified communications (UC) applications, said the supplier.

According to Sonus, the company’s entire SBC portfolio has been Microsoft Lync certified so customers can deploy Unified Communications (News - Alert) solutions from the core to the edge of their network with confidence.

Hany Taha’s blog indicates that key accomplishments due to NET acquisition are that it opens new channels and adds Federal government installed base for the company, Microsoft Lync certified SBCs are available for enterprise core and branch locations, including service provider deployments, and it brings a combined Sonus-NET product roadmap.

The blogger wrote SBC offers excellent solution for Tier 2/3 service providers and medium-to-large enterprises (250 to 10,000 concurrent sessions). Its key features include unique design with embedded transcoding/encryption processing for unbeatable real-world performance and scalability, advanced policy and routing intelligence, new IP-based multimedia services beyond VoIP , superior protection against network attacks, overload and outages while preserving stateful call handling, a proven SIP trunking solution with support for multiple SIP variants from IP-PBX (News - Alert) vendors, built-in media transcoding featuring custom-built DSP firmware.

The blog also sheds some light on new family members SBC 1000 and 2000, formerly known as NET UX 1000 and NET UX 2000, with unique features. Some of these include full SBC SIP security, demarcation, policy, and interworking functionality (including media interworking). Plus, they offer Microsoft Lync enhanced gateway/SBA (Survivable Branch Appliance) services for small to mid-size offices. And provide alternate SIP trunk(s) and/or TDM gateway for assured continuation of services. Additionally, there are analog ports for fax and low cost phones.

Sonus Networks (News - Alert) is a Platinum sponsor of ITEXPO West 2012. To be held Oct. 2-5 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX, ITEXPO (News - Alert) is the world’s premier IP communications event. The Evolution of Session Border Control
Session Border Controllers have come a long way since they were first conceived in the early 2000s as a simple, security-focused element. As service providers and enterprises began deploying more advanced real-time applications over IP-including Unified Communications, video, instant messaging, and conferencing-the burden on SBCs grew in step.

The ABCs of PCI DSS + VoIP
As the boundaries between VoIP and IP-based data networks continue to blur, enterprises would be wise to apply the same levels of network security across all entrypoints. Session border controllers are designed to protect VoIP network borders from unauthorized entry, but not all SBCs are created equal in terms of security features and functionality.
