One of the top players in SIP communications, Sonus Networks, has successfully completed the acquisition of Network Equipment Technologies (News - Alert) (NET). With this acquisition, Sonus' position in cloud-based unified communications is greatly enhanced as it expands the company's portfolio of Session Border Controller (SBC) solutions for enterprise customers, among other benefits.

“The completion of the acquisition of NET (News - Alert) represents an important milestone for Sonus as it enables us to serve the enterprise market with a comprehensive portfolio of SBC solutions,” Ray Dolan, president and CEO at Sonus Networks, said in a recent statement. “The addition of NET also brings Sonus a very talented workforce across engineering, sales and services who can accelerate our ability to lead the market transition to Cloud-based Unified Communications (News - Alert).”

The Sonus and NET combined portfolio offers enterprise customers an end-to-end SBC platform suited for real-time, SIP-enabled UC applications. Furthermore, the entire Sonus SBC portfolio features Microsoft (News - Alert) Lync certification, allowing companies to deploy unified communications solutions in their networks without worry.

Integration plans for customer-facing operations and support processes have yet to be revealed but will "begin imediately," according to Sonus. Meanwhile, former NET channel partners are now designated as Sonus Partner Assure Authorized Resellers with the ability to qualify as Sonus Partner Assure Channel Partners, a designation which features access to Sonus' broadest portfolio of solutions and resources.

Sonus Networks also recently announced that its SBC 5000 series of session border controllers has been tested and certified in Microsoft's Unified Communications Open Interoperability Program for Lync Server 2010.

The SBC 5000 series includes the Sonus SBC 5100, which can deliver 250 to 10,000 sessions; and the Sonus SBC 5200, capable of supporting 64,000 sessions on a single server.

In related news, the Sonus SBC 5100 was recently selected by Telenet, a provider of broadband cable services in Belgium, to unify SIP communications for its 2,000 employees.
