Cyan, a supplier of software-defined metro network solutions, stated that Vocus Communications has installed the Cyan Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms and the Cyan 360 software-defined network (SDN) operations system at its newly built Auckland, NZ network.

Vocus, which provides telecommunications and data center services to ISPs in Australia and New Zealand, stated that Cyan’s solutions will be used for conducting multi-layer planning, management and performance verification over the new network that was built to offer superior services with more favorable economics.

“Cyan’s revolutionary SDN software systems simplify our operations and enable Cyan to provide us with superior technical support to deliver the service quality that our customers require. Further, the Cyan Z-Series platforms give us the ability to scale to 100G and provide a foundation to virtualize our network to support sustained service innovation”, stated McDonald Richards, CTO with Vocus, in a statement.

Cyan exclaimed that its Z-Series platforms modularly support the aggregation and grooming of packet, SONET/SDH, OTN and wavelength services natively in individual, highly-integrated platforms. The platform’s unique nature is that it can at first be constructed as a single-purpose, single-service platform and later can be evolved to support additional functionality as required.

Delivering a full life-cycle, multi-layer, multi-vendor approach to network operations, Cyan 360 delivers advancements that accelerate services innovation, while simultaneously reducing associated capital and operational expense.

Cyan Z-Series platforms with Cyan 360 multi-layer planning, management, and verification software-defined operations systems enable the industry’s first ‘Software-Defined Metro Networks’.

Cyan added that with the scale advantages inherent in its Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms and cost advantages afforded by its Cyan 360 SDN operations system, Vocus is well positioned to continue its rapid expansion. Vocus acknowledged that Cyan’s solutions exceeded its expectations and were priced at substantially lower cost than other options presented to the company.

The Evolution of Session Border Control
Session Border Controllers have come a long way since they were first conceived in the early 2000s as a simple, security-focused element. As service providers and enterprises began deploying more advanced real-time applications over IP-including Unified Communications, video, instant messaging, and conferencing-the burden on SBCs grew in step.

The ABCs of PCI DSS + VoIP
As the boundaries between VoIP and IP-based data networks continue to blur, enterprises would be wise to apply the same levels of network security across all entrypoints. Session border controllers are designed to protect VoIP network borders from unauthorized entry, but not all SBCs are created equal in terms of security features and functionality.
